KITULO NATIONAL PARK
Local refers as a bustani ya Mungu – The Garden of God- while botanists have dubbud it Serengeti of flowers. Kitulo is in need a range of botanical marvel, home to a full 350 species of vascular plants, including 45 varieties of errestrial orchid, which erupt a riotous wildflowers display of breathtaking scale and diversity during the mainrainy season of late November to April.

Located in the Southern Tanzania, The temporary Park headquarters at Matamba are situated approximately 100kms from Mbeya town.
Getting there: 4 x 4 only. From Chimala, 78kms east of Mbeya along the surfaced main road to Dar es Salaam, head south along the rough but the spectacular dirty road Called 57 (hamsini na saba) after the number of hairpin bends along its lengh to the temporary park headquarters at Matamba from where it’s another hours drive to theplateau. Basic and erratic public transport is available.
What to Do: Good hiking trails exist and will soon be developed into a formal. Trai system.open walking across the grassland to watch birds, and wildflowers. Hill climbing on the neighboring ranges. A half day hike from the park across the livingstone mountain leads to the sumptuous Matema Beach on the lake Nyasa.
When to go: wildflowers displays peak between December and April. The sunnier month of September and to November are more comfortable for hiking but less rewarding to botanists.
Accomodation:
Mbeya is serviced by everything from luxury hotels to simple guest houses, while the simple guest houses also exist in Matamba there is no accommodation in the park as yet. but very basic accommodation and meals are available. Three special campsites are planned within the park.
